A group of friends who organised a charity music evening in Hellesdon last November have presented a cheque for £2,085.86 to cancer charity the Big C.

Kim Nolan, a 56-year old carer, called on friends Paul and Yvonne Pritchard who live in Bowthorpe to help her run a stall at the Hellesdon carnival last July. The money raised at the carnival enabled the trio to hire out the Hellesdon Community Centre to host a musical evening later that year.

They booked local bands Killer Tomatoes and Gameplan to play and both groups donated their appearance fee to the Big C.

On the night there was a raffle which raised more than £300 with prizes donated by the public, local shops and national chains including Next and Sainsburys.

The friends chose the Big C because they’d had personal experiences with cancer. Mr Pritchard explained: “My wife and I have both lost people to cancer and it seems like everybody knows somebody who has had the disease so we thought we’d like to do something. The Big C is great because it’s a local charity which is helping local people.”

Diane Northway, Big C community fundraising manager, was thrilled to receive the donation.

She said: “It’s fantastic that they organised this all themselves and raised a phenomenal amount of money for us.

“It really does make a huge difference to the Big C as £1,500 pays for ten months of bereavement support groups and £500 can pay for 20 sessions with the Citizens Advice Bureau to talk about financial difficulties cancer sufferers are going through.”
