Union’s concern over mental health staff survey results

Staff survey results for Norfolk and Suffolk NHS Foundation Trust (NSFT) demonstrated the “devastating” impact of mental health cuts, union officials said.

More than 40% of mental health workers said they had witnessed potentially harmful errors or near misses at the NHS trust and more than half of workers said they had suffered work-related stress in the last year.

The survey results come less than a week after NSFT was warned by the Care Quality Commission of the need to urgently improve services at Hellesdon Hospital.

The organisation, which is in the process of reducing its budget by 20%, is ranked in the bottom 20% in 21 out of 28 categories in the staff survey, compared with other mental health trusts in the country.

Andrew Hopkins, acting CEO of the mental health trust, pledged to improve staff engagement after a period of significant change.

Emma Corlett, Unison media spokesperson, said: “These staff survey results demonstrate the devastating impact of cuts to mental health services on staff morale and wellbeing. Staff are the biggest asset that mental health trusts have, and working under such continued pressure is having an impact on their health, and consequently the quality of service they are able to provide.”
