Comedy duo Simon Pegg and Nick Frost brought a smile to the face of a brave battling teenager when they visited him in hospital.
The pair - best known for films such as Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz and Paul - were named in young Deryn Blackwell’s “wish list” of people he would like to meet.
The list was drawn up by the 13-year-old while he battles a rare cancer combination.
The Watton teenager is thought to be the only person to have both leukaemia and Langerhans Cell Sarcoma at the same time and is currently at Bristol Hospital for Children where he has been since February after a bone marrow transplant.
To his surprise, the two stars of some of his favourite films had been made aware of his condition and they visited him yesterday.
His mum Callie Blackwell said: “It was just bizarre to be honest. I’ve never been star-struck before but seeing them was so surreal.
“Deryn is a massive, massive fan, as am I, and they were both so lovely.”
Ms Blackwell said the pair had been made aware of Deryn’s condition after he had drawn up the “bucket list of special activities he wanted to do and people he wanted to meet remind him he has something to live for.
As previously reported, the Blackwell family was recently given the earth-shattering news that Deryn’s marrow had failed to graft.
After four doses of chemotherapy to eradicate any donor bone marrow stem cells still left in him, the last bag of Deryn’s own cells were used in a final-bid to save his life.
His family now have an anxious wait to see if it has been successful.
During Pegg and Frost’s visit yesterday, Deryn had to have his arm put in cast, which Simon then signed.
And despite feeling under the weather, Deryn was able to make the pair laugh, coming out with one-liners from their best known comedies.
Meanwhile, the teenager also received a parcel from Top Gear star Richard Hammond yesterday. The package contained a jacket and a host of Top Gear goodies with a message from the presenter himself.
Pegg and Frost’s visit comes just days after Deryn enjoyed a day at Ston Eastern Park with Paul Hollywood.
