Plans for a new £5 million health centre in Reydon have cleared the final hurdle and been approved by the Department of Health.

The centre, which will be built on the former Eversley School playing field, will provide new, “fit-for-purpose” accommodation for GPs and other services.

The full business case for the centre was approved by the board of NHS Norfolk and Waveney in November and today’s government announcement means work can now begin on the scheme.

The name of Sole Bay Health Centre has been chosen following discussion with the Southwold and Reydon Society.

Health bosses at NHS Great Yarmouth and Waveney Clinical Commissioning Group are working together on the project, which has already received planning permission.

Andy Evans, chief executive of the commissioning group, said: “We are delighted that we have the go ahead to build the health centre.

“This moves forward our plans to provide innovative and integrated services for the people of Great Yarmouth and Waveney in modern and attractive premises.

“The health centre is one of our first steps in our ambition to provide out of hospital care wherever possible, moving care closer to people’s homes, and providing integrated and seamless services to patients.”

The new surgery will have space for GPs to provide teaching to undergraduate students and training to post-graduate doctors.

There will also be a community pharmacy as well as space for a range of outpatient and community-based clinical services.

It will be designed to meet the very latest environmental and accessibility standards and will have potential for future expansion.

Dr Andrew Eastaugh, a GP at Southwold, said: “The doctors and staff are very excited about the prospect of moving in to the new premises and working closely with our community care partners to provide a full service that meets the needs of patients in the 21st Century.”
