Archant Norfolk 2014

Children, parents and grandparents alike donned their trainers and shorts to get active during today’s glorious weather for the first leg of this year’s North Norfolk Village Games competition.

The sporting bonanza, organised by Active Norfolk, is in its fifth year and hosted eleven different activities for around 200 people at Cromer Academy’s Sports Centre.

From children as young as eight, the day saw six teams battle it out to get to the county final on July 13 at the UEA Sportspark.

Sports included table tennis, badminton, adults football, athletics, archery, rounders, tennis, short mat bowls, darts, tag rugby and a fitness triathlon.

Aaron Roberts, Active Norfolk’s rural sports development officer for north Norfolk and Broadland, said: “The event is all about getting people out, having fun and taking part in sport and physical activity. That’s so important now and especially relevant to people today.

“The main aim of the event is to get people doing something physical.

“It also builds social cohesion as it brings people together. Everyone has fun and there is also some light-hearted rivalry between teams.”

He also thanked the volunteers, including Active Norfolk staff, who helped with the day.

The villages or towns with the most points will go though to the July final and Mr Roberts added: “Hopefully we will have a north Norfolk winner.”

Winners from each area of Norfolk including the south, east, west, Broadland and Breckland, will battle it out in the final and a winner and runner-up will be selected from each village category.
