Members of the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) will launch a campaign against the coalition government’s decision to ignore the Pay Review Body’s recommendation on nurses’ pay. They will be protesting from 11am on Thursday at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital.

The government approved a 1pc increase for NHS staff from April. However, an estimated 600,000 health workers only received their normal incremental pay rise rather than a recommended 1pc.

In a survey, 95pc of RCN members said that they wanted to oppose the government’s decision on their pay. The organisation will run a national day of action on Thursday.

Karen Webb, RCN Eastern regional director, said: “No one is denying that times have been tough and that difficult decisions need to be made, however nurses have already done their bit. They’ve cared for record numbers of patients through the most disruptive reorganisation in the history of the NHS and in the face of huge workforce cuts.

“Nurses deserve to be valued and appreciated and this paltry increase, which most of them won’t even see, sends a very different message.”

Further information on the campaign can be found at www.rcn.org.uk/whatif
