A nurse from south Norfolk who went beyond the call of duty to ensure people received their flu jabs has been nominated for an award.

Anita Hasting, staff nurse in respiratory medicine outpatients at the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (N&N) has been shortlisted in the flu fighter champion category of the NHS employers’ flu fighter awards.

The 65-year-old, of Morley St Botolph, near Wymondham, is one of 29 ward vaccinators trained by the occupational health team at the N&N.

But what made her stand out from the others was that she went the extra mile to ensure a high percentage of the respiratory department, not just the ward, received their flu vaccination each year.

During the winter, Mrs Hastings often came in on days off to give people the jab. She said she was surprised to be nominated as she just saw it as part of her job to ensure that her colleagues always got their flu vaccination, something which she has done for the last nine years.

She vaccinated 170 colleagues in just three weeks and gave the most flu jabs to staff within the NNUH, with the exemption of those given by the occupational health team.

Chris Parfitt, senior nurse for respiratory medicine at the N&N, said: “A tremendous effort has been demonstrated by Anita in ensuring her colleagues in this high-risk area are protected for the flu season.”

Hilary Winch, occupation health nurse manager who co-ordinates the flu vaccination campaign each year, said: “Anita is a valuable asset to our flu vaccination campaign, encouraging and stressing to her colleagues in respiratory medicine the importance of having their flu vaccination each year.”

The winner of the award will be announced at a ceremony in Leeds on February 27.
