Staying in shape and keeping a decent physique requires lots of effort and plenty of self-discipline.
But a couple from Oulton Broad have proved what hard work can achieve after beating off fierce competition from more than 200 athletes and fitness models around the world to land a clutch of highly-coveted titles.
Don Akim, 43, and Rosanna Beckett, 33, picked up three trophies between them in the Miami Pro World Championships – billed as the “best and largest fitness” modelling and natural bodybuilding contest.
And what made their achievement even more impressive, is that it was the first time they had entered.
The event, held earlier this month in St Albans, Hertfordshire, saw 220 athletes vying to become champions.
Rosanna won with the bikini class world championship trophy after scooping the Ms Bikini tall class B category. Meanwhile, her fiancé Don was also impressing the judges by picking up two trophies – winning the Muscle Model (male) class A category, and the Fitness Model (male) over 40’s category.
It is believed to be the first time that a couple have landed world championship honours at the same event.
Don told The Journal: “We both made a commitment to take part and went through three months of intense training. All the training was done at Nirvana Fitness gym and health club (on the South Lowestoft Industrial Estate). We’re grateful for all their support, and for that of our personal trainer Matt Beardon, who was fantastic.”
Having previously finished in second place at the East Anglian bodybuilding competition last year, Don admitted he did not know what to expect when he showed off his physique in his categories
“Rosanna went up first and I was thrilled – over the moon – that she won,” he said.” It was nerve-racking and I didn’t expect anything, but to get called up and then wait a few minutes to be chosen, well it was fantastic.”
He added: “This was my first fitness model contest and Rosanna’s as well. I don’t think the judges even realised we were a couple, as they selected us on our individual merits.
“When we told them later, they were like, ‘wow!’”
Having tasted success in the competition, the couple are now seeking the support of people in the Lowestoft area after they were selected as finalists for Xf:sport Magazine. After attending a fitness model workshop, they were selected along with two other couples to win a place on the front cover of the national magazine.
The winners of the competition will be decided by a public vote. Rosanna said: “My fiancé and I are passionate about keeping fit and we train together so being on a cover together is a dream.”
To vote for Don and Rosanna, you need to visit Facebook and search for ‘Xf:sport cover competition’ and click on the link below their photograph. But be quick as voting closes next Thursday, April 25.
