A nursing home’s caring atmosphere has been praised once more by a national watchdog.

Staff were celebrating after the Kirkley Manor nursing home in Lowestoft received an overall good rating from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) for being safe, effective, caring, responsive and well-led.

After an unannounced inspection of the Kingsley Healthcare run home, on Kirkley Park Road, over two days in August relatives and residents praised its caring and attentive staff members.

The care home was previously inspected in 2015, and the good rating was maintained once more.

Home manager Gary Foley said: “We are pleased to have maintained our good rating and welcome the inspectors’ wholly positive comments in their report.

“We care about everyone involved with the home and are continuously looking to improve. Our team share our vision and make a fantastic difference to people’s lives. I would also like to thank everyone for their great feedback about the home.”

The report highlights the home’s caring atmosphere with one resident telling inspectors: “I get on well with the staff. We have a good laugh. They know me very well and have been very kind to me.”

Family members praised the way they were involved in making decisions about their loved ones’ care, and one resident said: “The nurses and carers are marvellous.”

The inspectors praised the home’s person centred care and observed how care records were individualised to include detail about residents’ likes, dislikes, hobbies and interests.

Residents said they had the opportunity to take part in a good range of activities, with a singer entertaining residents on the day of inspection, which was noted by inspectors.

Inspectors said there were always sufficient staff on duty, the service continued to practice safe recruitment procedures, medicines were managed and administered safely and appropriate procedures were in place to ensure the cleanliness of the home.

The report highlights Kirkley’s strong leadership and includes a variety of comments from residents praising the manager. One resident said: “He speaks to everyone and has a good memory for any issues raised or family stuff.”
