Supporters of the Jenny Lind Children's Hospital celebrated a significant milestone on Monday, as the unit marked its 164th year.

When the hospital opened in 1952, it made Norwich only the second city in the country to have a children's hospital after Great Ormond Street in London.

The Norwich infirmary for sick children admitted its first inpatients on April 3, 1854 thanks to the generosity and goodwill of Swedish opera singer Jenny Lind.

Jenny Lind, dubbed the Swedish Nightingale, was one of the best known and most popular entertainers in mid-19th century Europe..

Now part of the Norfolk and Norwich University Hospital (NNUH), a fun day was organised on Monday to mark the hospital's birthday.

Hospital chief executive Mark Davies celebrated with staff and cut the birthday cake.

The unit now helps more than 130 local children every day with the help of fundraisers.
