Parents have been urged to get their children vaccinated on time after a big increase in whooping cough cases was recorded in Norfolk and Suffolk.

New figures from the Health Protection Agency (HPA) show that there were nearly ten times more cases of whooping cough reported in the east of England in 2012 compared to 2011.

In Norfolk, there were 157 cases last year, compared to 14 in 2011, and in Suffolk there were 174 whooping cough cases, compared to four the year before. The news comes despite almost 60pc of pregnant women receiving a whooping cough vaccination to protect their baby.

Mary Ramsay, head of immunisation at the HPA, said the number of whooping cough cases had been a decrease in December, since a peak in October.

“It is very encouraging to see that nearly 58 per cent of pregnant women delivering in December in the east of England had accepted the offer of a vaccination against whooping cough. We would like to remind pregnant women how serious this infection can be in young babies and how it can in some cases cause death. Vaccinating women between 28 and 38 weeks of pregnancy should offer babies protection against whooping cough in the first few months of life, before they receive their own vaccines.”

  • Almost 60% of mothers have the jab. This means that over 40% don't care enough about their furure child to have a simple vaccination that can prevent them getting this potentially fatal illness. Probably a great percentage of this 40% are the ones who look upon having a child as an annual pay rise from the tax payers, rather than a labour of love.

  • I have had whooping cough, my siblings had it and one of my kids had it-despite being immunised. It is very nasty and very scary , bad enough for older children let alone tiny babies It must be terrible for little babies and their parents trying to cope with them while they struggle to breathe . I am no fan of pharmacutical companies , but earlier generations endured diptheria, typhoid ,smallpox and polio- I am sure none of us would like to see our children routinely affected by them. If measles mumps and whooping cough can go the same way and save deafness, blindness, sterility, brain damage or death would any poster really be sorry? Immunisation campaigns should target migrant communities to offer them protection.

  • " Being vaccinated does not necessarily stop you getting a disease , it means you get in a less virulent form" boll*x, as this jab has never been tested on pregnant women, one can only assume it's useless..and seeing that the whooping cough outbreak is mainly in the over 15 age group, this does seem a waste of time...Biggest winners are the docs who get shedloads cash for every pregnant women they jab, typical of the failing NHS.

  • ** " So even if the mothers have the vaccination, it doesn't stop babies from going down with whooping cough ".**. Er , just how ignorant are you or is it just another wind up Norton ?. Being vaccinated does not necessarily stop you getting a disease , it means you get in a less virulent form. Apparently it has also escaped your notice that the blood supply of the mother and embryo are connected....what you give the mother you give the unborn child. Dope.

  • nrg : *** " and all of those babies may have suffered from other illnesses that contributed to their deaths " ***. All deaths were confirmed after laboratory testing for the bacterium Bordetella pertussis.......which was the cause of death. Your posts are like a return to the dark ages , based as they are on equal measures of fear , superstition and paranoia. And stop using ridiculous argot like der , tis etc......pitiful in man your age.

Der proof in the pudding will be how many babies die from this years outbreak, following der mothers who've been jabbed.

  • nrg: ** "as they get a bit fat bonus from the pharmaceutical globalists for letting the sheeple become unpaid lab rats...."**. At the utterance of the key word " sheeple " sensible people may now depart this thread and leave nrg to stew in the reeking pot of his own barmy conspiracy theories. Save in the knowledge that no one at any time in the future who has responsibility for health policy in this country will be listening to these anti-vaccination cranks. And it is a good thing that the likes of nrg will not be getting themselves or their children vaccinated. Over many generations they will be less well adapted and prepared to fight disease and by a process of natural selection will die out leaving the human gene pool in a much healthier state.

  • Pregnant sheeple madame...when the piggy flu was being bigged up by the world health and our own pharmaceutical rent boys-girls, the vaccine was proved to be useless against the man made flu and had many nasty side effects for many kids the world over, again another human lab rat test failure at a great cost to the hard pressed taxpayer and the unsuspecting flu jab victims....google bbc news ..An increased risk of narcolepsy has been found among English children vaccinated with the swine flu vaccine, Pandemrix. lab rat kids

  • In 2001 there were 8 reported deaths of babies due to whooping cough, one less than this outbreak, no panic back then to use the untested drug on pregnant mothers....we'll wait to see if there's big spike in autism during the coming year....untested drugs another new norm.

  • As I commented in the EDP it is well known that the vaccine does not give life long immunity. I was immunised in the early fifties ( one of the first I guess) and was quite ill when I caught whooping cough in the sixties. Re immunisation of older people might be a plan. Immunising pregnant women helps to ensure they are immune and they pass this immunity to their unborn child which lasts for a short time after birth, in the same way that they retain some post natal immunity to other diseases. It is the time between the waning of the immunity conferred before birth and their first immunisation when they are most at risk. It is no surprise that there is an outbreak and young adults are being affected. There will be those whose parents declined the vaccine in the 80s because of real concerns about the reactions some batches had been causing. And of course immigration of un immunised people will also figure in the statistics. Health professionals should be recording the national origins and vaccination record of those affected so that they know how best to offer immunisations in the future in order to improve "herd" immunity.

  • Daisy, so you feel fine that this vaccine, which has not been tested for use with pregnant mothers is ok. Not forgetting the supplying pharmaceutical company cannot be sued due to clauses with our government.
