Patients are set to benefit from improved services after a new base for mental health workers in south Norfolk was officially opened.
Former Norwich City goalkeeper and manager Bryan Gunn performed the ribbon cutting duties for the Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Trust centre in Wymondham.
The new facility at the Gateway 11 Business Park will bring more than 120 health workers together under one roof after previously being spread across the south of the county.
Officials from the health trust said the new centre will enable staff to provide better services for children, adults and older people with mental health issues.
Mr Gunn said he hoped to challenge the discrimination and stigma associated with mental illness and people should not be afraid to ask for assistance.
“We are fortunate in this area that Norfolk and Waveney runs top-class mental health facilities and it is always striving to make itself better.”
“If you’re depressed, or anxious, if you’ve got eating disorders, or you’re self-harming, or you think you might have the symptoms of illness such as bi-polar disorder, or schizophrenia, then do yourself a favour, and ask for help. Because it is perfectly okay to do so,” he said.
The newly built energy-efficient Gateway House, which has been leased by the health trust, will be used as a base for staff who will liaise with GPs and visit patients in the community.
Maggie Wheeler, chairman of the Norfolk and Waveney Mental Health Trust, added: “I think it is better for the team and it is more cost effective for the organisation and for the first time the staff can support one another. If the staff feel good, it is better for the service users.”
Supporters of Scottish champions Celtic are in Norwich ahead of the Adam Drury testimonial game tonight.
