Staff at two of the region’s hospitals have been praised for their “excellent” work by a health watchdog after inspectors made an unannounced visit to their wards.
Inspectors from the Care Quality Commission (CQC) visited the GP unit at Great Yarmouth’s Northgate Hospital and Beccles and District War Memorial Hospital just before Christmas.
In their reports, which have just been made public, they congratulate the nursing teams at both sites, highlighting their quick response to patients’ needs and the way they treated those in their care with respect and dignity.
Both sites have also been given an overall seal of approval after meeting all of the CQC’s key standards including the care and welfare of patients, staffing and safeguarding of people who use their services.
Senior Sister Brenda Redding, who leads the team of nurses and healthcare assistants at Northgate’s GP unit, said making it right for patients is a team effort.
“We are very proud of this CQC report. We work as a team, focused on what is best for our patients, so the positive feedback is a credit to all,” she added.
And Sister Di Rudge, who leads the team at Beccles St Mary’s Road hospital, said: “I am very proud of my team who constantly strive to give our patients a high standard of nursing care. I am delighted that the CQC have recognised our hard work.”
The 15 bed GP unit at Northgate looks after older patients who need close medical care, in some cases after receiving treatment at hospital, or end of life care.
Beccles meanwhile, has 21 beds for people needing rehabilitation or palliative care and also runs a minor injuries unit, which is open every day for 12 hours.
Tracy Cannell, managing director of East Coast Community Healthcare - which provides NHS community health services in Yarmouth and Waveney - welcomed both reports.
She said: “Naturally we are delighted and extremely proud that the CQC has recognised the very high standards of care provided by our nursing staff.
“This is official recognition of both their commitment to our patients and also of the very hard work of the wider team within East Coast Community Healthcare.”
But she said teams were not “complacent” and despite the glowing reports they would continue to build on their good work.
“We are always looking for ways to improve the care and service we offer and we shall always respond to feedback from our patients and partners,” she added.
