The county’s first Admiral Nurse is set to start work in the spring after Dementia UK and Age UK Norfolk joined forces in a scheme aimed at helping more families.

The two charities received £60,000 from the People’s Health Trust for the new role, which they hope will be the first of many Admiral Nurses to work in the county.

Recruitment has begun for the specialist nurse position, which will be based at Dereham Hospital and will work with health and social care professionals to make sure people with dementia are getting the help they need.

The charities hope that more nurses from Dementia UK’s Admiral Nursing service will be recruited in the future, which will work on the frontline providing support in people’s homes.

Kate Rudkin, head of development and operations at Age UK Norfolk, said it was hoped that whoever becomes the county’s first Admiral Nurse will start the post in early March.

“This is a fantastic opportunity to improve the support that people in Norfolk with dementia and their carers currently receive. With the number of people with dementia in Norfolk predicted to rise, it is vital that we put in place forward-thinking dementia strategies now that enable us to manage in the future,” she said.

Emma Hewat, dementia pioneer at Dementia UK added: “We’re delighted to be working with Age UK Norfolk to bring Admiral Nursing to the region. This innovative new role will facilitate the sharing of best practice, skills and knowledge with health and social care professionals in the local community to help families to live well with dementia.”

  • I say, that gives me an idea. What if we merged the NHS and the Navy? That would create geneuine offshoring of health provision outside the UK tax regime and attract inward private investment. What do you think, eh Georgie?
