Television presenter Kate Thornton has visited a Norwich clinic for a documentary about her own teenage battle with anorexia.

Viewers of the hour-long documentary, called Kate Thornton – Anorexic: My Secret Past, will see the presenter visit the Newmarket House clinic in Newmarket Road to meet young people battling the condition and learn more about the help they are being offered.

The Channel 5 programme, part of a series of documentaries fronted by celebrities, will be shown at 10pm tonight.

In the programme Thornton takes a candid look back on her experience of her own eating disorder and meets a series of experts and other sufferers to gain a first hand insight into the debilitating illness.

The film includes interviews with her friends and family as well as information and facts from medical experts.

And she travelled to Newmarket House, an independent residential hospital with just 10 beds which is dedicated solely to the treatment of eating disorders, to meet people with an eating disorder and to speak to consultant psychiatrist Dr Jonathan Wilson.

The clinic’s founder director Penelope Baily said: “She said how she didn’t expect to be so deeply affected by meeting people who were ill.

“It’s a good piece that does highlight the need for help for these girls and boys and how more and more treatment is being carried out in the community.

“Even those people with unbelievably low body mass index are still being treated in the community rather as an inpatient and it’s not a good situation.”

Speaking on This Morning about the programme, Miss Thornton said: “It is a deceptive illness, a lonely illness and still one that’s really difficult to fathom.”
