Building work has started on a new £6million 60-bed care home in Diss to help deal with the needs of the area’s growing elderly population, creating more than 70 full and part-time jobs.
The Greensleeves Homes Trust, which provides care for older people, said it chose the town as the location for the home because it had identified a need for elderly care in that area.
De Lucy House, as it will be called, will devote half its beds to patients with dementia and also provide respite support for families who care for older relatives.
The home on the site of the former Cartco transport depot in Victoria Road, Diss has been designed with a “resident-friendly” layout, with generously-sized bedrooms and communal areas, as well as facilities including a cinema, coffee shop, hairdressing salon and treatment room.
A spokesman for Greensleeves said the aim was to try and give residents as normal a life as possible.
Paul Newman, Greensleeves chief executive, added: “Greensleeves aims to provide the very best quality of life for all our residents and our homes are designed with this in mind.
“De Lucy House will be a beautiful new home with views across the golf course.
“Its proximity to the town means that we have the opportunity for involvement with the local community.”
Greensleeves chairman David Ballard said the home would be “an excellent asset for the community, providing first-class care for older people, as well as jobs in the area.”
A ceremony attended by Diss mayor Neil Howard was held on Wednesday to mark the first bricks being laid on the site, followed by a reception at Diss Golf Club.
It is due to be completed by spring 2015 but Greensleeves has said it will be starting a recruitment campaign in the near future to fill the nursing and care roles required.
