Traditionally, it is the groom who nervously waits for his wife-to-be to arrive in style in a horse and carriage, classic car or limousine.
However Darren Stubbings made a more unusual choice to arrive for his big day driving his father’s Scania lorry while his blushing bride waited at Thetford’s Bell Hotel,
Although many couples spend hours searching for the perfect mode of transport for their big day, the Bury St Edmunds-born long-distance lorry driver knew there was only one way he could make an entrance.
So the 38-year-old arranged to borrow the heavy goods vehicle from his father’s employers, Jobe Transport, based at the Roudham Road Industrial Park near East Harling.
“Darren has always been surrounded by trucks,” said his new wife and childhood sweetheart Victoria.
“When I first met him his dad worked for a transport company and we’ve got a photo of him aged seven standing by his dad’s truck.
“It was just fitting for Darren - it was perfect for him.”
Although arriving in a noisy truck is not everyone’s idea of romance, Mrs Stubbings said: “I loved it.
“It was great that he arrived in his dad’s truck. If I wasn’t so worried about my dress, I would’ve arrived in one too.”
The future couple first met when the new Mrs Stubbings, whose maiden name is Richardson, was serving on the checkouts in Iceland aged 16.
A 17-year-old Mr Stubbings would wait at his future wife’s checkout, even when the queues were smaller on other tills.
Eventually, he plucked up the courage to ask her out - but they split after six months.
However four years ago, when the future Mrs Stubbings was creating her Facebook account, who should she see but her old teenage boyfriend.
She sent him a message and two rekindled their romance after more than 15 years apart.
“Darren was into cars and trucks and partying then,” she said. “It just wasn’t our time.
“This time round, it was the right time for both of us.”
The pair, of Woodlands Close, Thetford, wed on March 8 - Mrs Stubbings’ 37th birthday.
They chose that date as a tribute to the groom’s parents, who got married on his mother’s birthday and went onto have a long and happy marriage.
Mrs Stubbings spent the eve of the wedding having a birthday meal with family and friends at the Bell Hotel.
The newlyweds also held their wedding reception at the venue.
