National Grid wants to build a two-mile overhead line to connect a proposed new power station, on the outskirts of King’s Lynn, with the main electricity supply near West Winch.

The Planning Inspectorate, which oversees major infrastructure projects, last night said the proposal had been accepted for examination - meaning it can proceed towards a formal decision.

“As far as the process is concerned the application will be reviewed, which will take six months, in which the public have an opportunity to give their views,” a spokesman for the inspectorate said.

“At the end of that six months, the Planning Inspectorate will make a recommendation to the Secretary of State for Energy, who will then make a decision whether to give it consent.”

To register for the consultation, go online to www.planningportal.gov.uk/infrastructure and visit the Kings Lynn B Connection page, or call the helpline on 0303 444 5000 for a printed registration form.

  • Well, I hope the Planning Inspectorate pay close attention to Page 2 of the National Planning Policy Framework under the heading "Achieving sustainable development". The last or fifth guideline included to achieve such development requires 'using sound science responsibly'. Finally, planning has included a requirement to use the scientific method which places a strict burden of proof on the developers National Grid that such a connection has to be overland rather than underground. The NPPF does not reinforce any argument that the cheapest method is the only one or that finance should be the only criterion for decision.
