The Bungay Events and Business Association (BEBA) is looking for new volunteers and committee members.

BEBA grew out of the Bungay Chamber of Trade two years ago and is responsible for the organisation of the town’s popular street markets which bring thousands of visitors to the town.

The next event is the Garden Street Market on Sunday, May 13, followed by the Antiques Street Market held on the last day of the Bungay Festival on Sunday, July 22, which will be run by its originator, Kate Button of Black Dog Antiques. The final market of the year is the Christmas Market, which will be on Sunday, December 2.

BEBA also produces the Welcome to Bungay leaflet, and has two other leaflets in the pipeline - Food and Drink in Bungay and Where to Stay in Bungay. Members also work with other organisations and councils and played a huge part in securing the hour free parking for the town.

However Simon Thompson, who has held the reins since BEBA’s inception, will be standing down as chairman at the group’s annual general meeting on Tuesday, April 10, and a replacement needs to be found.

The meeting will be held in the Bowerbank Room at St Mary’s Church from 6.30pm, and BEBA will be looking for nominations for all of the committee posts - chairman, deputy chairman, secretary and treasurer - as well as welcoming new members.

Current secretary Didy Ward said: “This year we will be working hard to create the definitive Bungay website which will be a one-stop shop for visitors and Bungay businesses alike. Bungay businesses are an attraction in themselves with many coming to the town for its distinctive independent shops as well as our many other attractions.

“It was a blow to us all when we learned that we were losing our last bank in Bungay but we will continue to work with the town council to ensure there is a 24-hour cash point in town. And we will continue to work with other Bungay organisations such as the Castle Trust, Bungay in Bloom, the festival committee and the Christmas Lights Committee to ensure that Bungay grows as vibrant market town in the glorious Suffolk countryside.

“We welcome new members and would love committed individuals to join the team.”
