Passengers described hearing a “loud bang” when a train hit a branch on the line between North Walsham and Cromer.

A Greater Anglia spokesperson said: “A train was taken out of service after it struck a branch between North Walsham and Cromer at around 9.20am on Wednesday, August 9. As a result, the 9.44am Sheringham-Norwich service was cancelled.

“We apologise to passengers for the inconvenience caused.”

Passenger Eleanor Pringle said: “We heard a loud bang and the lights started flickering, and then the train shuddered to a stop.

“All the lights then went out, so it was pitch black. Everyone was saying, ‘Oh, what’s this?, so it was quite dramatic. There was an announcement over the intercom that we had just hit a small tree.”

The 8.21am service arrived at Cromer station about 20 minutes late.
