Top decision-makers at Great Yarmouth Borough Council will be out and about listening directly to people in the streets as part of a pioneering new tour of the borough, which starts on Monday.
The GYBC Listening Hour will see Trevor Wainwright, the council leader, and Jane Ratcliffe, the chief executive, listen to the views and ideas of residents at different public locations each week.
And to help passers-by spot the pair, they have even commissioned special all-weather high-visibility jackets, marked on the back with the words “council leader” and “chief executive”.
The GYBC Listening Hour will kick-off on Monday, October 7 at 1pm, when Cllr Wainwright and Mrs Ratcliffe will be out and about in Great Yarmouth’s bustling Market Place.
They will then be at Gorleston High Street on Wednesday, October 16 at 3pm, Caister High Street on Tuesday, October 22, at 11.30am, and outside of the shops, in Magdalen Way, Gorleston, on Tuesday, October 29, at 11.30am.
Over the next few months, they plan to tour the other high-footfall public locations across the borough. Details of their tour locations in November will be announced nearer the time.
Mt Wainwright, who is also a ward councillor for Magdalen Ward, in Gorleston, said: “The GYBC Listening Hour is a pioneering new way for us to listen to residents’ thoughts, concerns and ideas, so we can work more closely together to further improve the quality of life in the borough.
“We are still available to be contacted via telephone, email, letter or the website, but we hope these tours, where we are there to listen in person, will encourage more people to share their ideas and find out more about how the council works.
“We plan to tour every busy place in the borough in the coming months, so look out for the bright yellow jackets and feel completely free to approach us for a chat.”
Mrs Ratcliffe said: “Since taking over as chief executive earlier this year, I have been seeking more ways for the council to engage with the public.
“When this idea came up, I jumped at the chance for us to listen directly to people and take on board views, ideas and feedback to further improve public services.”
