A £6.5m scheme to spruce up Cromer’s Victorian seafront is a couple of “technical” hurdles from the start line after the government agreed to hand over the money.

The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) announced the funding as part of more than £2bn of Environment Agency work in the coming years.

The scheme, spearheaded by North Norfolk District Council (NNDC), will shore up the town’s groynes and add concrete armour to its sea walls - some of which date back to Victorian times.

A spokesman for the district council said: “The scheme, as we always believed it would be, is on the allocated funding list, which means the money is approved for next year. But we still need to get final technical approval in a number of areas before we can start the work.

“It needs to get past the Environment Agency project appraisal board, which sits next month, and the Marine Management Organisation to decide how it might impact on sea life.

“Finally, we need our own planning and listed building consents.”

  • In reply to ennywnai :- Government Department, the Environment Agency has been given the money to spend on projects that score above a given level of justification points. It seems that Cromer has reached that criteria. Cromer town centre is someone elses responsibility, the retail landlords by chance? If you would prefer the money can be spent in Lincolnshire or Essex.

  • 6.5 million is an awful lot of money to spend on revamping the promenade , couldnt the money be put to better use by improving the town for the residents. 70 people are about to loose their jobs at the crab factory, why cant some of this money be used to prevent this ? or to create jobs in the town ?
