A pub in the heart of Gorleston town centre is seeking permission to open 24-hours per day “to show sporting events”.

Police and four neighbouring residents have objected to The Tramway pub’s licensing application, which would allow 24-hour sale of alcohol.

But landlord Philip Taylor said complaints are unfounded, and the pub would not open late on a regular basis.

The application for the pub – beside Gorleston library in Lowestoft Road – would make it the only pub in Gorleston allowed to open beyond 2am.

“I purely want this licence for sporting events to try to keep the business open as a lot are shutting down,” explained Mr Taylor, who also runs the King’s Head pub in Loddon.

“We’re trying to run a legal pub, we do shut on time, live music does stop at midnight and the juke box is turned to a reasonable level. I don’t see why there’s any problem.”

He said the licence would save him the cost and paperwork of applying for a string of one-off event licenses for events like test match cricket in India and boxing.

He added he was the first landlord in Norfolk to gain a 24-hour licence when running the Duke’s Head in Gorleston High Street from 1999 to 2006.

“It worked,” he said. “We didn’t keep it open 24-hours then and we don’t expect to now.”

Michaela Kent, manageress of The Tramway, is keen to offer more to sports fans.

“No-one else in the area really shows boxing events, and we’ve got to look to Brazil with the World Cup and the next Olympics,” she said. “We wouldn’t open every day of the week – just for events.

“It would allow somewhere for people to watch sport together.”

The 39-year-old has represented Britain at shot put and javelin at events including the Belgium world junior games in 1989, and said The Tramway is a very “sport-minded” pub.

She added there is no history of disorder, a CCTV camera on the library overlooks the pub and there would be a last-entry policy. But police fear late opening would allow people to get more drunk, and thus increase crime and disorder.

Tony Grover, licensing officer for Norfolk police, has written to the borough council to raise concerns.

“The police are concerned that if this venue were to become the only venue in Gorleston with permission to be open beyond 2am it would be seriously likely to attract customers who may already be suffering from the adverse effects of alcohol consumption and who would have otherwise dispersed from the area,” he wrote.

He said crime figures do not show disorder in the area after 2am, and added “that is the way police would like to keep it”.

The main complaint from neighbours concerns sound pollution.

Mrs M Bowles, of Lowestoft Road, wrote “the music is so loud we think it’s coming from our own front garden” and feared extending the hours would make sleep “impossible”.

But others cite smashed bottles, “drunken vomit puddles” and urinating in the street as reasons the hours of alcohol sale should not be increased.

The application will go before licensing councillors at Great Yarmouth town hall on Tuesday, January 8.

  • Philip maybe we don't want to "man up and leave our names" because I don't want you after me and it helps people really speak their minds when they can remain anonymous so as not to be hasseled by the pub mob. Also V really knows what he is talking about. If he says there is a disturbance there is a disturbance. Also Philip get a life and run your business because this site is for commenting on articles not arguing with people.

  • I was gutted to hear that it was granted until I looked at the terms. " All doors and windows MUST be closed when live music is on and I MUST not be able to hear any music from the pub in my front garden. I can't wait, iPad at the ready to record all you failings. I moved near the pub when it a very nice place go but since Mr Taylor has taken over it has really gone down hill.

  • That is not the case I am the manger and have been for the last ten months . I have not changed my practice in any way . I make sure my live music finishes at 12 pm or before as this is the time limit bands play . I actually costs more to have them play longer . I am glad the pub is covered by CCTV tv as this will prove this . Modern technology is a good send . We also have the issue that through the grounds of The Tramway is a public walk way this is often used by people who have been using the high street pubs to make there way to the pubs on the sea front and for people to make there way back . They often leave empty cans ,bottles and rubbish in the car park I have to clean this up .i know this is not my rubbish as I don't sell McDonald's or beer in cans or large bottles of cider. This reduces my control on the car park as halve the people using it are not my customers . I would be happy for the access to stop .

  • I live near the High Street and have to put up with the regular FriSat night crowd wandering round the streets in the early hours disturbing people so I dont want another reason for people to be out late. As for the Duke's Head the noise that came from there late at night was often a problem so I can't see how that can be used as an good example - people who live near the High Street get fed up with all the noise late at night.

  • So Mr Taylor you said "we do shut on time, live music does stop at midnight" I am guessing I must live near a different Tramways pub. EVERY FRIDAY & SATURDAY NIGHT live music goes on past midnight, sometime it lasts until 00:45. The music is so loud at times the kids have to share a room at the weekend as they cant sleep in the front bedroom. We have lived here over 10 years and in the last 6 months the above has got worse. Living near a pub I understand that the above go on but this going on 24 hours a day is too much.

  • We don't need to be giving pubs more freedom we need to be restricting them. Don't let them open 24 hours a day, don't let them sell people too much alcohol, make them keep the noise down ( I don't want to listen to drunks and loud music and I don't want it to effect the value of my property). We also need an open container law so the drunks cant leave with open containers of alcohol, drink in public, or be publicly drunk.

  • The pub is part of the community . If you have any issues please come over and discus them. Your neighbour who attended the meeting agreed with us that the music did finish at 12 and the High St noise was not just customers from the Tramway , which is not consistent with your first statement . The CCTV had no evidence of any of the behaviour described by yourself . The police also have no records . I have copied your statements and will keep them for future reference . We are also installing a new CCTV system which will record when the bands finish if the doors and windows are open too . Shame you don't feel able to work with us .

  • This can't be down to just people leaving the Tramway . I am not saying that all my customers are angels but every effort it made to not disturb the residents in the area . We have no residential properties next door to us or directly infront or behind us . The public walk way is a great short cut for people in the day time . 90 percent of the people using the doctors at the back of the public house use the car park as short cut they also use the car park to use the library ,at night people also use the car park as short cut to the public houses on the sea front and clubs .You have people from nine other public houses in the High St area using the same routes thats not including the ones which drink at home first .I have to clean the mess up what they all leave behind as I said before I don't sell KFC ,Subway , or Mcdonald ,large bottles of extra strong cider , Stella in bottles or cans of strong lager .These are purchased from shops . I don't let customers take glasses to smash on the car park as glasses cost money and causes health and safety issues . I don't want to open 24 hours a day . I would like to open when Cricket or Rugby is played in Australia , the Grand Prix is held in another time zone . When a British boxer fights in America which is every eight months or so . The police would be made aware weeks before the event . Not everybody can afford to watch this at home now a days some of my more mature customers requested this that is we put in the application .
