A Gorleston great grandmother was surrounded by family from across the globe to celebrate her 100th birthday.

Relatives of Anna Jones flew in from Canada, America and South America to toast her landmark year during a huge family gathering.

The centenarian said the get-together at the weekend had been “lovely”. And she was then treated to further celebrations with friends and neighbours in Meadow Court on Wednesday - the day of her actual birthday.

The mother-of-three said turning 100 did not feel any different and she felt “good”.

She added: “I have been very spoilt. I thought often ‘goodness whoever wants to get that old?’ but if people spoil you enough it’s fine.”

Mrs Jones was born in London and worked as a nurse at St Thomas’ Hospital. She continued nursing until having her first child Robert, when she was 30, and then worked and volunteered with the WRVS.

Her husband Roland worked as a surgeon in Colchester and for many years the family lived in the historic town.

When she and Roland split up some years later she went to live in Surrey, before moving to Devon.

But after Robert took a job in Norfolk, and with her other children living in America and Leicester, she moved across country and settled in Gorleston, where she has lived since 2010.

Robert, 69, said: “We tend to have family parties on various noted points and thought mother’s 100th was the best excuse we could ever find. It was lovely to have everyone together and we had lots of family photographs.”

Mrs Jones said she was very pleased to receive her card from the Queen, which has taken pride on the top of her bookcase.

The grandmother-of-14 said she had no secret to long life, but she did enjoy a glass of red wine every night and the occasional beer.
