Thousands of children will be learning about where the food on their plate comes from at one of Norfolk’s popular annual attractions.

Hemsby Mega Maze opens its gates on Sunday for the seven-week summer season.

This year’s theme is The Great British Food Hunt where children are encouraged to learn about food miles, led on their journey by fruit and vegetable characters.

The Hemsby Mega Maze, now an institution, is hosted by farmer Richard Hirst who farms 350 hectares on the east coast.

“The maize maze is now 6ft tall,” said Richard. “It’s in the shape of a combine harvester with a fun quiz trail for families to follow as they wind their way through.”

The shape of the combine harvester is 3D with its signature cutter bar and reel, driver’s cab and unloading auger. The design also includes a smaller maze in the shape of a bumble-bee.

“It’s really important to give children the opportunity to learn about food and farming,” said Richard. “Hemsby Mega Maze uses a series of easily recognisable fruits and vegetables, transformed into fun characters with eyes, legs and arms. The characters include a husk of sweetcorn, broccoli, strawberry, raspberry, apple, potato and a ‘sausage’ dog.

“Visitors can interact with quiz boards dotted around the maze and the boards encourage people to buy British – one in particular says an apple can travel more than 1,200 miles if it is grown overseas.”

But the venue is much more a maze, there is also go-karts, football, trampolines and swings, croquet, garden games and a tractor and trailer tour around the farm.

  • If thousands of children will learn where their food comes from ... the headline won't help their spelling!! How about we teach them how to spell 'maize'?
