A district councillor has organised a societies day to help new residents of a south Norfolk village feel at home.

Leslie Dale, South Norfolk councillor for Hethersett, was inspired to put on the community event by his experience as a new resident.

'In 2002 it was my and my wife's view, as newly arrived residents, that discovering what extra-mural community activities were available for us to join was extremely difficult,' he said.

A societies day was held five years later, but the councillor hopes to make it a recurring event.

'The idea of a second societies day has always been on my wish list for the particular benefit of new arrivals and all village residents,' he added.

Using £100 of his councillor's personal grant money, Mr Dale will hold the event at the beginning of September.

So far, more than 25 societies have agreed to come - offering a range of art, sport, gardening, history, health and music.

It will be held on Saturday, September 6 from 12pm to 4.30pm.
