A stretch of main road in south Lowestoft is to be closed off from next week by the National Grid so gas connection work can take place.

The work in London Road South to provide gas supplies to two properties in the road is due to start on Monday and is due to be complete by late Thursday evening.

To carry out the work London Road South will be closed off to traffic between Cliff Rioad and Lorne Park Road between 6pm and 11pm.

The evening closures in the Kirkley part of Lowestoft have been agreed by National Grid with Suffolk County Council to minimise disruption to the local community, businesses and motorists.

Originally the work was due to start on Monday, June 23 and fears had been raised by the Kirkley Business Association that the stretch of road would be closed during the day.

Andrew Stone, National Grid operations interface manager, said: “We always make every effort to minimise any disruption our work may cause and to complete it as quickly as possible.

“To carry out this connection safely we will need to close the road because engineers will have to dig across the width of the road to install the new pipe from the gas main in the road to the flats.

“Following discussions with Suffolk County Council it has been agreed that the road closures will take place during the evening to reduce inconvenience to local people.

“A diversion route is in place for motorists and access will be maintained for pedestrians.

“We apologise for any disruption caused by these essential works.”

Last September another set of works by Anglian Water saw a saw of the road closed off for 12 weeks for £300,000 of sewer repairs after the road had subsided last July after a sewer chamber collapsed. Part of the road was also closed off due to the December’s tidal surge.
