A pair of dedicated fundraisers who drove an old mail man across the country last year have been honoured with a town council’s civic award.
Jim and Jennifer Cawte, from Wymondham, were given the honour at a civic reception at the town’s Dell Bowls Club on Saturday.
Mrs Cawte said they were delighted with the honour.
She said: “We are thrilled and honoured to have received this civic award.
“Fundraising is something that we both enjoy doing and community service has been a large part of our life since Jim joined the Wymondham Lions Club in 1978.”
The 11-day trek last May raised £4,350 for the East Anglia’s Children’s Hospices’ (EACH) nook appeal - a fundraising campaign by the charity to raise £10m to build a new children’s hospice near Norwich.
The couple drove from Wymondham to John O’Groats, down to Land’s End and back to Wymondham in their 1983 Royal Mail postal van.
They called the fundraiser JOGLE - short for John O’Groats / Land’s End.
The adventure covered 1,855 miles and they used 241 litres of fuel.
They later presented a cheque to representatives from EACH at Mannington Hall in north Norfolk.
Joe Mooney, Wymondham’s mayor, said the couple were worthy winners of the award.
He said: “Jennifer and Jim are a great local fundraising team.
“They have over many years managed to raise thousands of pounds for local good causes and I know that many groups and projects in Wymondham have benefited from their fund raising activities.
“They are a credit to Wymondham and they are in my view very worthy recipients of this year’s Wymondham Town Council civic award.”
Mr Cawte was a Royal Mail employee and was instrumental in the restoration of the vehicle, which was used for promotional tours.
The couple then bought it at auction in 2002.
Mr Cawte has been a Lions Club member for more than 37 years.
