A boost has been given to communities hoping to mark the centenary of the outbreak of the First World War after it was announced that a fund of more than £40,000 will be set aside to help people in West Norfolk commemorate the event.

Events and tributes are being planned across the country to commemorate the anniversary and to remember the lives of those who lived, fought and died in the Great War. West Norfolk council will be working with partners to organise a number of activities to mark this anniversary.

But the borough council is also making available a one-off fund, so that communities can bid for cash to help them put on an event, develop a project, provide educational activities or refurbish existing war memorials.

A total of £42,000 is available and priority will be given to projects that are able to evidence match funding and a high level of community engagement and support.

Any non-profit group can apply, including voluntary and community groups, parish or town councils, charities, churches, social enterprises, community interest companies or schools.

Elizabeth Nockolds, cabinet member for health and wellbeing, said: “2014 is a significant anniversary and it is important that people remember those who lost their lives in this conflict.

“The outbreak of the war may have been 100 years ago, but many families in this area were affected by the impact. I hope that communities will take advantage of this funding opportunity to create a fitting tribute to commemorate this centenary.”

The fund is being administered by the Norfolk Community Foundation.

The fund opened on Friday, January 13 and the deadline for applications is Friday, February 21.

Applications will be considered towards the end of March and successful applicants notified.
