A former teacher will be packing her bike helmet, paddles and hiking boots and heading to the Lake District to take on a multi-activity sponsored challenge for the NSPCC.
Rebecca Brown, 30, from Clenchwarton, near King’s Lynn, is taking part in the event after working as a teacher at the College of West Anglia for 18 months.
The ‘Chasing the Sun’ challenge starts at the crack of dawn on April 26 and will include off-road mountain biking around the famous lake of Derwentwater, a trek up and back down Haystacks and a three-mile canoeing event on Derwentwater - all before sunset.
Mrs Brown, who now works for Norfolk County Council in King’s Lynn, said her time as a teacher had convinced her of the importance of a safe and secure home environment for all children.
She said: “I have supported young people to achieve a minimum educational attainment while faced with the reality that many young people face some complex, long-standing barriers to learning.
“My role reminded me of the importance of effective partnership working with a range of outside agencies, including the NSPCC, to effectively support young people to meet their needs. This understanding has motivated me to do something different.
“I am completing the challenge with two of my best friends – Kelly Crawford and Helen Gooding – and we are most looking forward to supporting each other through the day and feeling fantastic when we cross the finish line before sunset, knowing that we have raised much needed funds for a charity we believe in.”
Fifty people are expected to take part in ‘Chasing the Sun’ for the NSPCC and the charity hopes the event will raise £15,000 in sponsorship for its services for children and young people.
Nicola Gibson, NSPCC community fundraising manager for Norfolk, said: “We really couldn’t continue helping vulnerable children and young people throughout the UK without the support of people like them.”
