Fourteen new affordable homes are set to be built following the demolition of the former Grove pub in Norwich.

The pub site in Cadge Road, North Earlham was the centre of a campaign last year, after residents said it was blighting the area, and had become a target for vandals, who had smashed windows, sprayed graffiti, and ripped out bricks.

But now plans have been lodged with Norwich City Council to demolish the pub and build 10 new houses and four flats on the site.

David Futter, who is working as agent for the owner Michael Rawlings, said all the new homes would be affordable and for family accommodation.

He said: “All the contracts are in place subject to planning, and the pub could be knocked down and the houses built very quickly.”

As reported, the pub has been vacant since July 2009, and earlier this year, more than 300 people signed a petition calling on the owner to clean it up.

Norwich City Council officers visited the site, which had broken windows, and glass strewn over the car park, and met Mr Rawlings, who was given a warning letter saying they intended to serve an improvement notice if the site was not cleaned up within two weeks.

He was asked to fix broken first floor windows, replace missing bricks and fix loose ones and clean up the car park.

Mr Rawlings said a fence had been put up to try and keep vandals out, but it had been pulled down three times.
