A Canaries legend will be following in the footsteps of screen icon James Bond by recreating one of the most nerve-jangling jaunts in 007 film history to raise money for one of Norfolk’s major charities.

Former Norwich City player Jeremy Goss is taking on his most audacious challenge yet by bungee jumping from the 220m high Verzasca Dam in Switzerland – one of the highlights of Pierce Brosnan’s GoldenEye Bond film.

The jump is the highest in the world from a man-made structure and more than twice the height of Norwich Cathedral’s spire.

He will freefall for eight seconds at a speed of 75mph and the recoil alone is 100 metres.

Now Mr Goss is challenging other thrill-seekers to join him on his leap of faith to raise money for the Norfolk and Norwich Association for the Blind, where he works as its events fundraiser.

“I’m looking to take a party of people over there next May,” he said. “Each person will need to raise £1,400 – £400 to cover the costs, leaving £1,000 to go to the NNAB so it can continue its work among Norfolk’s blind and partially-sighted community.”

He added: “I played football with and against some of the best in the world, but I’ve never done anything like this.”

The giant Verzasca Dam was completed in 1965, the year of Mr Goss’s birth, and he will do the bungee jump on May 11 – his birthday.

This year’s challenge follows his gruelling 1,300-mile “Back to Bayern” cycle ride from Norwich to Milan last summer when he recreated the footballing glory of the Canaries’ 1993 Uefa Cup run.
