A former Norfolk MP has been made an OBE in the New Year Honours list.

Conservative Christopher Fraser, who served as MP for South West Norfolk between 2005 and 2010, was named in the honours list for his public and political service.

The 50-year-old, who now lives in London, is also vice chairman of the Conservative Policy Forum, chairman of the Conservative Alumni Network and a patron of the Conservative Foundation.

The Tory, who was MP for Mid Dorset and North Poole between 1997 and 2001, was elected to serve South West Norfolk in 2005.

However, in 2009 the MP announced that he would not be standing for re-election in 2010 because of the ill health of his wife Lisa. The announcement came days after the Daily Telegraph revealed that the MP claimed £1,800 expenses for new fencing and hedging at his constituency home in South Lopham, near Diss.

Ian Sherwood, Conservative party agent for South West Norfolk, said he was “delighted” that Mr Fraser had been recognised in the New Years Honours.

“Christopher worked hard for this part of Norfolk while he was an MP and I particularly recall his work for our local Swaffham Community Hospital and working with others to highlight issues including the A11 and the challenges of life in rural Norfolk. Christopher was an excellent constituency MP, he has a long involvement with politics having served as a councillor before becoming an MP.”

“I know many local people along with members of South West Norfolk Conservative Association will be pleased to offer congratulations to Christopher on his award,” he said.

Mr Fraser is also honorary vice president of the South West Norfolk Conservative Association.
