The former landlords of the closed Railway Arms in Downham Market are already back in the pub trade.

Ian and Lesley Ann Pinches are working with Steve Cato and father and son team, Julian and Duncan Sutton, to open a “pop-up” micro-pub at Tottenhill.

The couple quit the award-winning Railway Arms pub and the Fenland Express café, both on platform one of the town’s train station, in October after seven years, because of a proposed rent increase.

The micro-pub will be called the Drivers’ Club and will be in the wood-panelled clubroom above the Historic Sports Car Collection showroom that adjoins Mr Cato’s restoration workshop for classic cars.

The venue was previously a part of the showroom and garage run by former Formula 1 and endurance racing driver Martin Brundle and his brother Robin.

The walls of the clubroom are lined with motor racing memorabilia.

Julian Sutton, an ex-Aerospace engineer and Grand Prix driver, approached Mr Pinches about opening the bar.

He said: “It is good news indeed that they are looking to dip a toe back in similar waters with this unusual but exciting venture.

“The Drivers’ Club has a half-size billiard table, leather armchairs and a fireplace along with a small library of books and magazines relating to motor racing.

“It complements and evokes an era of sports and racing cars that works well with the showroom downstairs.”

An initial opening evening will be held on January 20, with the doors open at 5pm and closing with last orders at 10.30pm.

Mr Sutton said: “We will be reviewing the success of this first event and hope to be open as a regular fixture on Friday evenings with a
view to extending to other days based on feedback
and our assessment of demand.”
