Tesco has announced that legal agreements paving the way for construction to start on its new store in Swaffham have been signed.
Breckland councillors approved planning permission for the store on Castle Acre Road in July 2012 by eight votes to three.
Since then the retail giant and district council have been locked in negotiations, leading to planning consent now being formally issued.
The milestone marks the opening of a three-month window for the decision to grant planning permission to be challenged in the High Court.
The Co-op, which has a store in the town centre, originally said it would seek judicial review of any decision to approve the application, but in January announced it would no longer pursue this option.
Construction on the store is due to start later this year, with the store scheduled to open in 2014.
The planning application divided the town, with some people welcoming the 150 new jobs Tesco said it would create, while others were worried about the potential impact on town centre shops.
Terrorism returned to the streets of London today as two suspected Muslim fanatics butchered a man in broad daylight in the name of “Allah”.

Excellent. Means I won't have to go to Dereham, Fakenham, King's Lynn or Watton and can do my shopping locally.

A shocking decision. Having boycotted Tesco for some years, I really don't want them on my doorstep.

Breckland councillors have alot to answer for. Why can't they support local business in the face of the constant onslaught from TescoN's one stop 'sheds'. RIP Swaffham town centre.

Although there is room for a Tesco's in Swaffham, the site chosen is the wrong one. Tesco's need to be on the Brandon Road on the outskirts. There will be nothing but Chaos on Castle Acre Road

RIP Swaffham town centre. TescoN has used it dubious planning arguments to bamboozle local planners. Breckland Council you have much to answer for.

In the not too distant future every High Street in Norfolk`s towns will consist of charity shops and banks. But then, all of us need to take the share of the blame. We all like the convenience of doing all our shopping in one place with the added bonus of free parking and low prices. A bit of a no brainer really.

Another planning approval of dubious merit and questionable legitimacy. Why is the lid never lifted on this lot?
