Campaigners working to keep a community hall open have taken a valuable step forward after securing extra time should it be put up for sale.

Jubilee Hall, in Aylsham Road, has now been listed as an asset of community value by Norwich City Council, which means that if it comes up for sale the community will be given a period of time to prepare a bid.

The Royal British Legion, which owns Jubilee Hall, has previously indicated that it is planning to sell the building as it poses an 'unacceptable risk' to charitable funds.

The application to get the venue listed as a community asset was launched by the Save Jubilee Hall Campaign.

Fran Hardy, a campaign member, said: 'It's the first hurdle and now we can get together and form a charitable incorporated organisation to actually run it.

'Of course the next hurdle will be managing to purchase the hall, but at least we are one step further on now.'

Campaigners would like to see the hall continue to be used as a base for ex-veterans, but opened up for more use by the wider community for events and activities.

They are hoping to start negotiations with the Royal British Legion regarding a purchase of the building.

However, the campaign needs more people to get involved, particularly those who have relevant experience of running a business or a charity.

Organisations or groups interested in using the hall, or volunteers who would like to get involved, can email martin.wyatt@surfanytime.net to register an interest.
