Forty trains which run on First Capital Connect’s routes are being given fresh seats and new flooring.

Coaches are also being made more accessible for disabled travellers and are being painted in neutral grey - ready for whoever takes over the FCC franchise, in September.

New features include a new fully automated passenger information system with audio and visual announcements.

David Statham, FCC’s managing director, said: “The upgraded train looks and feels like a new train and I am delighted our passengers can now enjoy a more comfortable and modern travel environment reaching several exciting destinations between London King’s Cross and Cambridge, Peterborough, and King’s Lynn

“This major upgrade provides better, brighter, new look trains, and will soon include enhanced accessibility features and improved on-board information.

“Since we took over this franchise we have added over 12,500 extra seats at the busiest times of the day on the Great Northern route through new trains and longer services. Now we’re giving people even more of what they want - better trains to travel in.”

Rail users think FCC is improving, according to the latest National Passenger Survey (NPS) results.

On the Lynn to London line, satisfaction for cleanliness of the trains rose from seven to 69pc. Results for punctuality and reliability have fallen from 84 to 75pc over the last six months. But customer satisfaction has risen from 33 to 43pc.

FCC says 180,000 people travel on its trains each day – 95,000 on the Thameslink route and 85,000 on the Great Northern route.
