This is the first glimpse at how a new supermarket in the north of the city will look.

Supermarket giant Morrisons opened its public exhibition yesterday to reveal its ambitions for the four-acre site off Aylsham Road.

They hope to build a food store on the site of Goff Petroleum, with the company removing the rest of its workforce to its Wymondham base.

The fuel distribution company and Morrisons have worked together to come up with the design for the 20,000 sq ft store and a planning application is expected by the end of the year.

At a public exhibition in St Catherine’s Church which opened yesterday, a spokesman for the supermarket said up to 250 jobs could be created.

He said: “People have been happy to hear the message we have given out.

“We are not looking to compete - we are looking to complement the area. We are looking to focus attention on the area.

“The area is losing out. We will help existing traders pick up trade passing by.”

But shopkeepers interviewed in yesterday’s Evening News said they struggled to see how the arrival of Morrisons would help them.

Rajivan Rakunathan, 33, who owns the convenience store on Aylsham Road, said he was 100pc against Morrisons coming, and said he would lose custom to the store.

The plans show the entrance to the site will be widened and there will also be 206 parking spaces.

Around 100 people visited the exhibition opposite the Goff Petroleum yesterday and were welcomed by Morrisons’ representatives who were collecting surveys on the arrival of the store.

The survey asks if people are for or against the supermarket chain moving into the area and asks for comments.

•The exhibition at St Catherine’s Church is also open today from 10am to 6.30pm.
