Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service's chief fire officer wants to hold a concert in Fakenham to thank its residents for their support following a huge blaze in the town.

Nigel Williams suggested the idea at tonight's Fakenham Town Council meeting which he attended with Gary Thorpe, watch manager at Fakenham Fire Station.

Norfolk Fire and Rescue Service tackled the biggest fire that Fakenham has seen in living memory on May 25 and much of the Upper Market area is still closed off to the public.

Mr Williams said: 'People have been very generous and we've had no end of donations for The Fire Fighters Charity.

'I've come here to say how very grateful we are for the money coming in to our charity.

'I think myself and a lot of fire fighters would like to put something back into the town; to put our arms back around the community here and to do something with you to help you.'

Mr Williams suggested that the fire service's own band, The Backdrafts, could perform a concert in Fakenham Market Place, free of charge, for any cause the people of Fakenham choose.

The idea is to be discussed further.

Meanwhile, Mr Thorpe highlighted the crucial role local businesses play in supporting the fire service.

He said: 'Without the generosity of employers allowing their staff to attend fires we wouldn't have a retained service and without that we would never achieve what we did on that day.'

Mr Thorpe told the meeting that the fire service will be donating more than £600 to the EDP and Fakenham and Wells Times' joint Let's Fight for Fakenham campaign, which will help victims of the Fakenham fire, including people who lost their homes and businesses which have been affected.
