The fifth annual Sunrise online film festival has been running for the last few weeks and featured 21 films from NUA students who were competing for the Public Vote Award and Critics’ Choice Award.

People were able to watch the films online and more than 200,000 votes were cast for the Public Vote Award which was awarded to Alicia Wailing.

The BA (Hons) Animation graduate won the public vote with her film Craboom, a film about a crab digging a hole on a beach and discovering a bomb.

Meanwhile the Critics’ Choice Award went to animator Joe Kinch for his film GUS, about a socially awkward man who imagines his alter ego to be a flying pig.

The festival was a partnership between NUA and London-based agency ditto, and supported by the Eastern Daily Press, Norwich Evening News and Mustard TV.

Phillip Long, arts and visual director at ditto, said: “This year’s Sunrise festival far exceeded our expectations.

“We had more than 200,000 votes for the Public Vote Award which was quite astonishing.

“Sunrise aims to provide a platform for young filmmakers, and the standard every year of the work submitted seems to progressively get higher and higher.

“The Critics’ Choice Award was given to Joe Kinch because we were particularly impressed with his storytelling ability, scene setting and illustration, the humour and the dark side to the story, as well as Joe’s enthusiasm for his work and the festival.

“He’s a very talented filmmaker, and the same goes for Alicia Wailing who won the Public Vote Award.

“They are both very deserving winners, and we are to proud have had their work in the festival.”

Jodie Wick, BA (Hons) Animation course leader, said: “The festival is an amazing opportunity for the now graduates to gain national exposure.”

The awards took place in London on Thursday. Visit www.ditto.tv/sunrise for more information.
