The car, which caught fire at around 11.20 this morning, was almost completely destroyed in the blaze.
Firefighters were on the scene of the fire, on a slip road onto the roundabout from the east-bound A47, within minutes of receiving a call at 11.22am.
Crews had attended reports of a person falling into the river at Boal Quay, but they were rescued before the brigade arrived.
The busy roundabout ground to a halt while crews used hosereel jets, foam and breathing apparatus to tackle the fire.
Traffic was moving again within half an hour. The burnt-out shell of the car is still at the scene. The driver is believed to have escaped uninjured.
