A friend of a popular 18-year-old Fakenham rugby player who died last month is organising a rugby tournament in his memory.
Sunday’s competition, to be held at Fakenham Rugby Club, has attracted interest from across Norfolk.
It will raise money for a charity established by the family of Craig Prior, who died after collapsing at his home in Jubilee Avenue, Fakenham on February 10.
Mr Prior, a prop forward, played for Fakenham at senior and youth level and has also represented Norfolk and Leicester Tigers’ Elite Player Development Group (EPDG).
His friend and former team-mate Rory Singleton, 18, who plays full-back for Fakenham, is organising the tournament.
He said: “Craig was my best mate. I knew him since we were eight or nine and I think this tournament will be a good thing to remember him by.
“I hope to have a competition in memory of Craig every year after this.”
Players will be coming in from Holt, Diss, Thetford, west Norfolk and Wymondham, amongst other places, and there will be several Fakenham teams taking part.
There will be matches for minis, ladies, under-16s, under-20s and seniors.
The bar will be open all day and there will also be a raffle and a cake stall.
Mr Singleton said: “It should be a really good day and I hope lots of people turn up to support it.
“Craig wanted the club to work together, so this is exactly what he would have wanted.”
The tournament will be in aid of the Craig Prior Memorial Fund, which is raising money for Fakenham Rugby Club.
The first plans are to buy a scrummage machine and a bench.
Mr Prior’s family is planning to attend. His brother Roger Palmer, 34, said: “I think it is fantastic that my brother, who was just 18, can unite a community in this way and that is a tribute to Craig and the character that he had.”
The tournament will run from 10.30am until about 4.15pm.
Meanwhile, Mr Prior’s funeral takes place tomorrow at St Peter and St Paul’s Church, Fakenham at 12pm.
The service will be followed by a celebration of his life at Fakenham Rugby Club.
Family flowers only are requested, and donations can be made to the Craig Prior Memorial Fund.
