The black comedy - made as a movie in the 195Os by Ealing Studios - sees widow Mrs Wilberforce in a battle of wits against a criminal gang posing as musicians and who take over her house while planning a heist.

The producers of the stage adaptation and West End hit are bringing the show to Norwich next month and are looking for women aged 55 or over to play friends of Mrs Wilberforce.

The show’s cast includes Michele Dotrice (Some Mothers Do Ave Em), Cliff Parisi (Call The Midwife and EastEnders), and Clive Mantle (Casualty and The Vicar Of Dibley), and the chosen extras would join them on stage in Norwich from March 4 to 9.

The extras, who do not need previous stage experience, will appear in the show at the end of Act One and the beginning of Act Two playing friends of Mrs Wilberforce who head to her house to listen to a concert.

John Bultitude, from Norwich Theatre Royal, said: “The opportunity to star in a hit touring show like this does not come along very often, particularly for those of slightly maturer years.

“So if you, or someone you know, would like the chance to tread the boards here, get in touch with the production team right now.”

The production is written by Norwich-based comedy writer Graham Linehan who is best known for penning Father Ted.

• The extras must be 55 or over and a dress size 8 to 14. No previous stage experience is needed but the extras must be available to take part in all performances, plus a rehearsal and costume fitting from midday on March 4.
