County councillors agreed at a meeting today (Wednesday) to put take half a million from Norfolk County Council’s reserves to pump into the budget for surface maintenance.

The money will be used to provide surface dressing, which officers see as the most cost efficient way to prevent pot-holes from being formed when water gets beneath the road surface.

And they also agreed to take £1.2m out of the council’s coffers specifically for structural maintenance work on roads in the Fens area, which had badly deteriorated because of drought,

Members of the county council’s environment, transport and development overview and scrutiny panel, heard how the estimated cost of fixing those Fen roads was £4.7m.

A bid to the government for extra cash to help failed, so councillors agreed to release the £1.2m for urgent surfacing and patching work.

With £1.15m already earmarked for those roads, it brings the total which will be spent to repair those Fen roads to £2.35, which will fund half the earmarked schemes.

The meeting also heard how the backlog of repairs needed in Norfolk has increased from £82.7m in 2011 to £89.9m in 2012.

  • When will they get it round their heads that surface dressing is a waste of time and money if you don't address the underlying problem in the first instance? It's nothing more than papering over the cracks.

  • Perhaps the headline should read:- "....to patch up Norfolks roads....". Also If surface dressing is laying those little stones on the road then that is a form of car destruction as the extra is never swept up

  • Lets build more roads and bypasses and motorways, raise that repair bill some more, why don't you cllr.s Building roads is unsustainable and 30% of Norfolk residents don't drive a car. Only when we can control mass will there be a stop to throwing good money away.
