It has provided a platform for a galaxy of musical superstars over the years and now the University of East Anglia has produced a book to list all the gigs that have been held there over the past 50 years.

Ed Sheeran, Ian Dury, Robbie Williams, The Stone Roses, Coldplay, Madness, The Buzzcocks, OMD, Roxy Music, U2, Primal Scream and Manic Street Preachers are among the musical heavyweights who have appeared in the UEA Gig List (1963-2017).

Gavin Hudson, who compiled the list, said: 'This is an attempt to list all the events that the Students Union organised over the last 50 plus years.

'I was inspired to research and compile the list following the sudden loss of Nick Rayns in April 2013. Nick was my friend and colleague for 34 years and, in my opinion, headed the finest gig programme of any Student Union in the country.

'I'm aware that the list below doesn't include the hundreds of charity events, Thursday LCRs, Club Retros, Tuesday fancy dress nights, Beat Pharmacy, Skool Daze, Brighton Rocks, Now 90s, the Other Ones, poetry readings, band competitions, dance Shows and plays. But hopefully some of your highlights and memories are here. To the best of my knowledge everything is correct, but I would be pleased to hear from anyone who has further information.'

The book is linked to the UEA gig history project, an online forum which highlights some of the UEA's history of hosting gigs from 1963 and which invited contributions from gig goers.

Ruth Selwyn-Crome, project manager, said: 'In 1976, UEA's then Vice Chancellor cancelled the Sex Pistols.

'Forty years later UEA wanted to make amends so set aside some web pages to showcase its history of hosting gigs from 1963 to today and invited academics, alumni, performers and local music-lovers to contribute memories.

'The gig-going public also responded magnificently via the @UEA gighistory Twitter feed by providing an additional bank of memorabilia to add to the Union's own archive of posters, tickets and photos.'
