Work begins on the Bungay road improvement scheme.

Work on a £440,000 road improvement scheme for Bungay got under way yesterday.

The Suffolk County Council led project, which includes making the town’s controversial one-way system permanent, will take 16 weeks to complete and exist in five stages.

However, the plans have been met with fierce criticism from a number of traders and residents who feel the changes will close the town.

In a letter to the county council’s chief executive, Deborah Cadman, resident Janet Kirkley said she wished to make a formal complaint about the process, the quality and the design of the one way system and the “waste of public funds”.

She said: “After exhaustive efforts on the part of a considerable proportion of the town’s population, we have an enormous amount of evidence and data, which reflects the view that this is destructive to the buildings, the businesses, the history and sustainability of our community. It is also unsafe. We feel that it has ignored the substance of the Road Traffic Act 1991, which regulates the working practices of your authority and that it has not paid attention to the Locality Act of 2011. iIt is not green or forward looking.

“Anticipating an unsatisfactory outcome to your 12-week review, I have already registered a complaint with the local authority ombudsman.”

The first phase of work will focus on the construction of new footways, widening of existing footways and a new pedestrian crossing in Wharton Street and Lower Olland Street.

Graham Newman, the council’s cabinet member for roads and transport addressed concerns about the scheme during a meeting last night organised by Bungay Town Council. Representatives from the town council and Kier MG contractors were also present.

A spokesman for the council said: “We have received Ms Kirkley’s letter of complaint, which is now being dealt with by our customer rights team. We’re writing to Ms Kirkley to confirm this and will be in contact with her once the complaint has been fully and thoroughly investigated.”
