A fire crew have been left twiddling their thumbs after being called to rescue a sheep stuck in water, only for the animal to escape before they arrived.

The sheep managed to set itself free after becoming stuck in water at Denver, Downham Market at around 10am today.

Norfolk fire service confirmed that a King’s Lynn crew was sent after a worried member of the public saw the sheep struggling.

But according to the service’s incident log, the sheep had “self-rescued” before the crew arrived.
