Dozens of schoolchildren got a first hand experience of the criminal justice system at the weekend.
Teams from Springwood High School, in King’s Lynn, Sir John Leman High School, in Beccles, Acle Academy and Ormiston Venture Academy, in Gorleston, fought it out in front of magistrates on Saturday for the 20th Magistrates’ Court Mock Trial Competition.
The 12 to 14-year-olds took on the roles of witnesses, magistrates, court staff and defendant in the annual contest at Norwich Magistrates’ Court, which is run by the Citizenship Foundation in partnership with the Magistrates’ Association.
The students enacted a specially written case in which the defendant stood accused of dishonestly receiving a stolen bicycle.
The competition os designed to enable students to learn about all aspects of the criminal justice system - the law, procedures, consequences and the staff – and to develop confidence in personal skills such as public speaking, analysis techniques and working as a team.
They were assisted by local magistrates, law students and other legal professionals.
