Plans have been submitted to Broadland District Council to extend the amount of overnight accommodation at the grade II listed Black Boys Hotel in Market Place, Aylsham and also to provide bed and breakfast accommodation in five ensuite guest bedrooms at The Recruiting Sergeant in Norwich Road, Horstead, again a grade II listed building.

Currently The Black Boys has a bar, restaurant and bed and breakfast accommodation in five en-suite guest bedrooms.

The proposal is to provide additional bed and breakfast accommodation in three en-suite guest bedrooms. The rooms to be converted were previously used as a function facility with a main room and adjacent bar and kitchen areas.

They also include a room where Horatio Nelson himself once danced.

Nicola Colchester of Colchester Inns, who have submitted the planning applications to Broadland District Council, said; “At the Black Boys it is a big room that was used as a function room but there is more business towards the bed and breakfast side of things. We will be retaining much of the character of the rooms, including the room that Nelson danced in.”

She added that at The Recruiting Sergeant the upper two floors had been previously lived in but that had not been the case for while, so it was making use of the room there. The plans, lodged with Broadland District Council are currently under consideration.
