More than 197,000 new solar panels could be built across three farms in north Suffolk if plans are given the go-ahead this evening.

Waveney District Council’s development control committee are to discuss all three bids when they meet at Lowestoft Town Hall.

The applications are for a 30MW solar farm at Benacre Road, Ellough, near Beccles, featuring 101,640 panels; an 11MW farm at the former Holton Airfield, near Halesworth, featuring 45,000 solar panels, and a 12.3MW solar farm at Mill Lane, Wissett, near Halesworth, featuring 50,376 solar panels

The application at Ellough from Lark Energy was initially for a 150-acre solar farm but, after hearing concerns from residents, they reduced their plan by 24 acres.

The committee is recommended to approve the farm, which would be there for 25 years, with a range of conditions including improving access and setting limits on the time lorries can visit the site.

Bernard Matthews’ processing factory is set to use the farm at the former Holton Airfield and export energy to the national grid, if approved.

This will last for 26 years and is also recommended for approval, subject to conditions.

The application at Mill Road, Wissett, is for land belonging to the family of Waveney MP Peter Aldous.

A verbal recommendation will be made on the night depending on an archaeology report, with this report vital to whether or not it is approved.

The parish council has given its approval, however a lack of previous investigation into the site has meant that a full archaeological evaluation has been requested and the result of this will help the committee to make the decision.
